We live in a hectic, crazy, wicked busy world. Many of us are just one ding, ring-tone, vibration or ‘you’ve got mail’ away from constantly being “connected” , available to and for whatever or whoever reaches out to us. Our schedules are packed. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I know I get a sense of worthiness through all this busy-ness. I mean all those emails, all the calls, the meetings, the obligations – I must be worthwhile if I am so busy! But this busy-ness – no matter how good the things I do maybe, this busy-ness that I sometimes wear as a badge of honor, is probably a sign of an imbalanced life. I am pretty sure I am not alone in this.
‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourself and rest a while.’ Jesus invites us, come away – step back and stand aside from all those things that consume and drive us so that we might remember and experience God’s presence and blessing. Come to a deserted place, maybe even where there is no wifi, no phone, no ear buds – dare I even say no bible or prayer book – all by yourself and rest in the presence of the Divine.
This is hard for some of us to do - that is probably why in Psalm 23 the psalmist says, “He makes me lie down in green pastures” : ) I believe God wants balance, wholeness and health and it is good news that Jesus invites us get away with him to rest. Rest is not only a God given gift – it is a God given necessity!
I pray that we each will take Jesus up on the invitation, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ And in that rest may we each experience the peace and blessing of our loving God and may our hearts rejoice and be filled to over flowing with thanks!
