November is
Just the Right Time
for Thanksgivings
November thanksgivings. I’ve always thought
that the month of November is a special time. It’s the start of
the college basketball season when the Wildcats’ push toward the
“Road to the Final Four” commences. That would be the University
of Kentucky Wildcats for those of you who are Sun Devil fans.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. But there is something special about
the hope and anticipation of great things to come that is
interconnected with November for me. This year is no different.
This November we kickoff the pledge drive.
Our pledge can be thought of as our thanks-giving for our church
family. We pledge out of a sense of thankfulness and
abundance. We are thankful for our church family, for
opportunities to worship God in community, and for the myriad of
ways we build relationships with each other through both
nurturing our members and “reaching out with Stephen” into our
surrounding community. We have so much to be thankful for.
And there’s more to give thanks for this
month. On November 11th we will celebrate and give
thanks for a new ministry at St. Stephen’s: mine with you and
yours with me. This is a special place with many gifted and
talented people who come together to celebrate all that St.
Stephen’s has given us.
A very special blessing in the Fry family
will be celebrated on Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd
this year. That is the day Zoë was born.
And don’t forget Wednesday 21st
at 7:00pm will be St. Stephen’s annual service of thanksgiving
and prayer. I’ve always felt like the ‘add your own
thanksgivings’ part of the Prayers of the People should be twice
as long. That way we can vocalize how blest we really are as a
people, as a family, as children of God.
This is a special time, so let’s designate
November as our annual thanks-giving month. At every shared
meal, take a moment to voice a blessing and share with others
the abundance of life and grace given to us from God’s bounty.
